The most popular way to get to Bacalar is to fly into Cancun and then drive south for about four hours. You can also fly into Belize City and then take a water taxi across the border to Chetumal.

From Guatemala, you can take a bus or shuttle to Chetumal and then follow the same directions. Bacalar is definitely worth the effort!

The high season (November-April) is the best time for warm weather and sunny days. Bacalar is located in the tropics, which means it is usually quite hot and humid all year round.

Visitors to Bacalar should not miss the San Felipe Fortress. Built in the 18th century to defend the town against pirates, it is now one of the most popular tourist attractions in Bacalar. You can explore the fortress, learn about its history, and enjoy the stunning view from the top of the walls.

Fuerte San Felipe is located in front of the town’s main square. The entrance fee is $2 per person, except on Mondays.

Sail on the lagoon of Bacalar

You can rent a sailboat or catamaran from one of the many companies in town. Once you’re out on the water, you can relax and enjoy the spectacular scenery.

We recommend you take a sailing trip with The Sailing Colibri in the afternoon.

There is also the option of a shared group tour and it is a bit cheaper. What we found surprising was the silence on the lake.

Cocalitos cenote is the perfect place to relax

Visit the Cenote Cocalitos in Bacalar to take a dip in the refreshing water or explore the caves. There are also small shops and restaurants nearby so you can grab a bite to eat after your swim.

Cenote Cocalitos is also known as the Sanctuary of Stromatolites.

There are a lot of stratified structures concentrated there, and these structures are very special to Mother Earth since they produce oxygen.

There are hammocks and swings available from which you can enjoy the beautiful colors of the lake. A place not to be missed!

The rapids are located in the southern part of the lake, and if you don’t have a car you can grab a private taxi. There is a restaurant, bar, hammocks, bathrooms, and… natural fast-moving rapids!

It is possible to rent a kayak here. We stayed here for a couple of hours and let the kids play.

In order to enter the restaurant, you have to pay an entrance fee of $5. You can pay by credit card or cash. Lockers are available. The restaurant is open from 10 am to 6 pm.

Any visitor to the Bacalar lagoon should be sure to kayak on the lagoon. You can rent a kayak from one of the many companies in town. Once you have paddled out onto the lagoon, you can enjoy the breathtaking views. If you stay close to shore, you can watch the sunset over the water. A kayaking trip at sunrise or sunset is truly magical!

There are two main Maya ruins sites that can be visited in the Bacalar area: Dzibanche and Kohunlich. Both are fascinating to explore and offer visitors a great insight into the Maya civilization. Dzibanche is famous for its well-preserved pyramids, while Kohunlich is famous for its impressive “mask temple”.

These two sites are definitely worth visiting if you’re interested in learning more about Maya culture.

Explore the Mayan capital of Calakmul

The Calakmul archaeological site is located in the jungles of the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve in the Mexican state of Campeche and contains a large number of ancient ruins of the Maya civilization. The views on top of the pyramids are unforgettable! We chose to do the short walks and climb both pyramids. This place is like Indiana Jones, full of jungle, monkeys, ancient Mayan temples,… And best of all, there are no crowds, just a few lost tourists just like you!

Take some lunch with you as there are no restaurants in Calakmul. In Xpujil, you can find Willy’s supermarket for food, drinks, and cash.

Mahahual is a great day trip

Mahahual is a small coastal strip that lies north of Bacalar and is a popular tourist destination.

Mahahual is known for its beautiful coral reef, and its turquoise waters are ideal for swimming, snorkeling, and diving.

Massages are available along the beach for $20 to $30 per hour.

It is also possible to snorkel off the coast with your own gear or rent a set.

You can also explore some shipwrecks on the protected reef Banco Chinchorro.
